Eikonoklastes (incomplete) by John Milton, 1649
By John Milton
John Milton, Eikonoklastes (“icon breaker”), an original, yet incomplete fragment of the book. It contains only pages and no cover; the Title page, and entire Preface; pages 1-54; 73-76 and 159-166. It was written in response to a work written by Joseph Jane, Eikon Aklastos (“the icon unbroken”). In 1649 King Charles I was executed,by order of the Parliament. Joseph Jane was a Royalist, and his work was written in response to the execution of his king. Milton, in response, penned a fiery response to justify the king’s execution. This is an important document in the history of not only England, but the world.
